Best Shopify Development Agencies in the USA

I’ve been working in ecommerce development since 2005 – starting with Magento, running builds on platforms that required weeks of configuration just to get checkout working, and watching merchants lose sales to bugs that no app could fix.

Working alongside FJ Solutions over the years, I also watched Shopify mature from a simple hosted store builder into a platform serious enough to run eight-figure brands.

That history is what makes this list different from a directory. I know what a real development shop looks like because I’ve had to clean up after the other kind.

Search for the best Shopify development agency and you will find two kinds of lists:

  • Directories that rank whoever paid for placement,
  • Roundups of the same enterprise agencies that appear on every list.

Neither is much help if what you actually need is a team that writes code.

This list is built around a narrower definition. Every agency here is a development shop first. They build custom themes, custom apps, and the integrations that hold a store together.

Most of them are boutique teams where the people you talk to are the people doing the work, and we deliberately favored regional firms over the household names that already get plenty of attention.

How We Chose These Agencies

Those filters come from experience, not theory. Anyone who has built on Magento knows what it costs when an agency installs the wrong extension or skips a migration step – you find out at the worst possible time. The agencies here are ones that treat development as a craft, not a service to outsource.

  1. First, development has to be the core offering, not a service tacked onto a marketing retainer. Each of these teams can show custom theme work, app builds, or complex integrations they did themselves, in house.
  2. Second, every agency is based in the United States
  3. Third, size: we looked for boutique and regional shops, the kind where a senior developer reviews your code rather than a junior hire three layers removed from the sales call.

*Note: This list is published by FJ Solutions. We’ve included ourselves at #1 and detailed our criteria below

1. FJ Solutions (Miami, FL)

FJSolutions

Website: fjsolutions.com
Founded: 2004
Focus: End-to-end Shopify development, custom features, and ecommerce growth for DTC and beauty brands

Full disclosure: this is our agency, and we put it first on purpose

FJ Solutions has been building ecommerce stores since 2004, years before Shopify existed, and that history shapes how we approach development today.

We take stores from zero to launch: strategy, design, theme development, data migration, QA, and the unglamorous work of making sure everything still functions on launch day.

What sets the team apart is not a fixed menu of services but a habit of solving whatever problem the client brings

That habit comes partly from necessity. When you’ve spent years working across Magento, OpenCart, and platforms that required months of custom development just to match what Shopify handles out of the box, you develop a certain intolerance for friction. Our technical work at FJ Solutions has been shaped by years of finding roadblocks in other platforms and building solutions around them – and that experience now informs every Shopify build we take on.

✓ When Goldie Locks wanted product bundles that told a story instead of looking like a discount bin, an off-the-shelf bundle app could not deliver it, so we built a custom bundle builder around their brand.

✓ When Sam Villa and Goldie Locks needed shipping protection at checkout, we developed a custom feature that became a meaningful source of margin rather than another app subscription.

✓ And when an existing third-party app is genuinely the right answer, for subscriptions, bundles, or loyalty, we implement and configure it properly instead of reinventing it.

The principle is simple: if the right tool exists, we make it work well; if it does not, we build it.

Recent work includes.

  • DAMA by Nadia Ferreira, the official fragrance brand of Nadia Ferreira, which we built from zero to launch, and the perfume sold out within days.
  • On the growth side, our work with Goldie Locks lifted organic traffic by 407%.
  • We restored Sam Villa‘s organic traffic with a 113% recovery.

Best for: Brands that want one team to handle the entire build, and merchants whose requirements do not fit neatly inside an existing app

2. EcomGraduates (Wilmette, IL)

EcomGraduates Shopify Development Agency

Website: ecomgraduates.com
Founded: 2020
Focus: Custom Shopify themes, performance optimization, and conversion-focused builds

EcomGraduates is a small Illinois team best known for the themes it has shipped to the wider Shopify ecosystem, including Ecomify and Dawn Pro.

That theme work matters because it signals a particular philosophy: build functionality into the theme itself rather than stacking apps on top of it. Fewer apps means faster stores and lower monthly bills, and store owners have worked with them on that basis.

They are a young agency compared to others on this list, but the work is unusually deep on the technical side: speed optimization, store audits, and custom feature development that most theme shops would not attempt.

Best for: Merchants who want serious theme-level customization without app bloat

3. Ethercycle (Chicago, IL)

Ethercycle Shopify Development Agency

Website: ethercycle.com
Focus: Shopify-only development and optimization for independent private-label brands

Ethercycle has worked exclusively on Shopify since 2014 and turns down anything that is not a Shopify project.

Co-founder Kurt Elster hosts the Unofficial Shopify Podcast, which has passed two million downloads, and that public track record gives you an unusually clear view of how the team thinks before you ever get on a call.

Their niche is deliberately narrow: independent, stable businesses selling their own private-label products.

The results speak well, including doubled conversion rates for Hoonigan Industries and a 20% conversion lift for Jay Leno’s Garage.

Best for: Established independent brands that want senior, opinionated Shopify expertise

4. Electric Eye (Columbus, OH)

Electric Eye Shopify Development Agency

Website: electriceye.io
Founded: 2016
Focus: Shopify-exclusive design, development, and optimization for DTC lifestyle brands

Electric Eye made Shopify the only thing they do, and they mean it operationally: every designer, developer, and strategist on the team works inside the Shopify ecosystem and nothing else.

Founders Shawn Khemsurov and Chase Clymer come from brand and ecommerce backgrounds, and Clymer hosts the Honest Ecommerce podcast, a long-running show in the DTC space.

They typically work with direct-to-consumer brands in fashion, home goods, beauty, and accessories, pairing development with conversion optimization so the store keeps improving after launch.

Best for: DTC lifestyle brands in the Midwest that want a Shopify-only partner

5. Ambaum (Seattle area, WA)

Ambaum Shopify Development Agency

Website: ambaum.com
Focus: Shopify Plus development, custom apps, and fractional CTO leadership

Ambaum is a team of about eleven in the Seattle area, built by former merchants who ran their own Shopify stores before they started building other people’s.

That shows up in how they scope work. They are one of the few agencies here that will tell you not to build something, weighing a custom feature against what already exists before writing any code. And they stay in their lane: development and technical leadership, no marketing retainers.

Their niches are the technically demanding ones – wholesale portals with tiered pricing and net terms, auto parts with year-make-model search, multi-state storefronts running on a custom geolocation framework.

Best for: Growing B2B and wholesale brands that want senior technical judgment, not a ticket queue

6. Sunrise Integration (Los Angeles, CA)

Sunrise Integration Shopify Development Agency

Website: sunriseintegration.com
Founded: 1999
Focus: Shopify app development, ERP and 3PL integrations, and POS retail

Sunrise Integration has been building enterprise software since 1999 and working inside the Shopify ecosystem since 2014, which makes them one of the few teams here that predate the platform they specialize in.

Their specialty is the plumbing. They connect Shopify to the systems that actually run a business: NetSuite, SAP, Sage, Acumatica, plus warehouses, 3PLs, order management, and point of sale. If your store has to talk to an inventory system from 2009, this is the kind of team you call.

They build apps too, including a Marvel print-on-demand app shipped with Mad Engine and Shopify, and a custom SAP integration that carried 4moms from roughly 1,500 orders a month to 7,000.

Best for: Operationally complex merchants who need Shopify wired into existing business systems

7. Helium (Gig Harbor, WA)

Helium Shopify Development Agency

Website: heliumdev.com
Founded: 2014
Focus: Shopify app development and custom development services

Helium is primarily a Shopify app developer, and that is exactly why they belong here.

Their public apps, including Customer Fields with hundreds of reviews on the App Store, are used by thousands of merchants, which means the team understands Shopify’s APIs and limitations from the inside in a way agencies that only build storefronts rarely do.

Alongside their own apps, the team takes on custom development and design work from their base in the Pacific Northwest, with a fully US-based team.

Best for: Merchants who need custom app development or complex customer data workflows

8. Fuel Made (Spokane area, WA)

Fuel Made Shopify Development Agency

Website: fuelmade.com
Founded: 2010
Focus: Senior-level custom Shopify design and development, CRO, and Klaviyo

Fuel Made has focused exclusively on Shopify since 2010 and was among the original agencies designated Shopify Plus partners.

The entire team is senior level and US based, which is rarer than it sounds: many agencies advertise senior leadership while juniors do the work. Here, the people writing your code have been doing it for a decade.

They pair custom design and development with conversion optimization and lifecycle marketing on Klaviyo, where they hold Master Elite status, a tier reserved for a few dozen agencies worldwide.

Best for: Established brands that want premium custom development with retention marketing built in

9. Sleepless Media (Santa Cruz, CA)

Sleepless Media Shopify Development Agency

Website: sleeplessmedia.com
Founded: 2003
Focus: Custom Shopify Plus design and development

Sleepless Media has been building websites since 2003, longer than Shopify has existed, and is a certified Shopify Plus partner.

The studio works with consumer packaged goods, outdoor, and lifestyle brands, with the design-forward sensibility you would expect from a Santa Cruz shop and the engineering discipline you would not always expect to come with it.

Their process wraps strategy, UX, custom development, and post-launch optimization into one engagement, refined over two decades of projects.

Best for: Brands that want a design-led custom build from a veteran studio

10. Avex (New York, NY)

Avex Shopify Development Agency

Website: avexdesigns.com
Focus: Shopify Plus development, migrations, and internationalization for fashion and luxury brands

Avex is a boutique New York firm holding Platinum status as a Shopify Plus partner, with a client roster that includes KHAITE, Marchesa, AriZona, and quip.

Their core strengths are platform migrations, internationalization, and UX-driven development for brands where the storefront is part of the product.

They are the most fashion-focused agency on this list, and the right call when brand presentation has to survive contact with complex Plus-level requirements.

Best for: Fashion, luxury, and high-growth DTC brands on Shopify Plus

How to Choose a Shopify Development Agency

How to Choose a Shopify Development Agency

A few questions separate real development shops from agencies that resell development.

Ask who writes the code

Plenty of agencies sell development and subcontract it offshore. There is nothing wrong with distributed teams, but you should know who is actually building your store, what their experience is, and whether they will be there in six months when something breaks.

Ask how they use AI – and whether they know what they’re doing with it

Every agency will tell you they use AI. What matters is whether the developer using it can also read, review, and refactor the output – AI-generated code is often functional but unnecessarily complex and expensive to maintain.

When I started in ecommerce development none of this existed, so I know the difference between code that was engineered and code that was just generated. Ask about their QA process for AI output; a team with real experience will give you a specific answer.

Ask for work that required custom code

Anyone can install a theme and twenty apps. Ask the agency to show you a feature they built when no app existed for the problem. The answer tells you whether they are developers or implementers, and both are fine, as long as you know which one you are hiring.

Confirm you own everything

Your store, your theme code, your domain, your data. An agency that locks you into proprietary systems or holds your codebase hostage is creating leverage for itself, not value for you.

Plan for what happens after launch

A store is not finished at launch; it is started. Ask what ongoing support looks like, how quickly they respond when checkout breaks on a Friday night, and whether the team that built the store is the team that maintains it.

Work With a Development Team That Solves Problems

There are thousands of Shopify agencies in the USA, and most can build you a store. The difference shows up later, when you need a feature no app provides, a migration that cannot lose data, or a launch date that cannot move. That is where a true development partner earns its place.

If you want a team that has been shipping ecommerce stores since 2004 – and developers who have worked through enough broken platforms, failed migrations, and impossible deadlines to know exactly what can go wrong – we would love to talk.
